Once again this spring, we welcome back the shining star of our spring menu, Weisser Spargel – White Asparagus. This extravagantly prepared menu item is served many different ways, from a phenomenal soup to the traditional König Ludwig Schnitzel. We have a plethora of dishes on which to feature our spring star.


And a special thank you to all who will participate in the special Wednesday dinner “Lamm und Spargel” next week to welcome The Queen of Vegetables. We will continue with the special pictured above, the Chicken Stew. We will have a great crowd with a lot of smiling faces, and full stomachs!

The Story of the White Asparagus
When you live in Germany, you will see people from the cities making pilgrimages into the countryside each spring to buy the Queen of Vegetables from the farmers right off the field. In addition, they go out to eat the fresh white asparagus in the village Gasthäuser. The highlight of the season for many small villages is the annual “Spargelfest,” complete only with a large tent, where guests enjoy various different asparagus dishes, lots of Bier and a big formal evening dance to crown the “Spargel Königin,” the beautiful Queen of Asparagus for the village. People consider Asparagus a delicacy since Roman times.
Traditionally, Spargel is harvested from Easter until St. Johannis Day, June 24. To harvest after this date kills the roots, as the plant cannot leaf out properly to make it through the heat of summer and to gain the strength for the next season. The old farmers say, “When the cherries get red, leave the asparagus in its bed” – a farmer who maintains the field of asparagus can harvest for about ten to twelve years.

Greetings, Stein Club members!!

Mother’s Day has passed, we’re in the middle of May and summer will soon be here.  But it certainly doesn’t feel that way today.  It’s currently 57 degrees on my back porch, dreary, gray and rainy.  Feels more like December!

I hope you had a chance make it out to some of the recent special Wednesday dinners.  This past week we wrapped up the rauch (smoke) series with a delicious meal of various smoked seafood items.  It was worth the price of admission just for the bacon wrapped scallops!!  Hats off to Chef Seth and his team.

This coming Wednesday night will be our regularly scheduled May Stein Club dinner at 7:00 p.m. in the Bavarian Grill Biergarten.  We will again be enjoying our traditional May meal, the Aschaffenburger Schlachtefest.  We sometimes affectionately refer to this one as German Lasagna – smoked pork chops covered in sauerkraut topped with mashed potatoes and sausages served with two delicious Helles biers.  You don’t want to miss this one!!  Please RSVP ASAP if you’ll be attending.

I’m also very excited that white asparagus has arrived!  We will be continuing the special Wednesday dinners with the next several focused on various ways to serve the “queen of vegetables”.  Makes plans to join us on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. for these outstanding meals.  All of these are RSVP events so call to make your reservation.

Last of all a quick reminder about our June Stein Club meeting.  Jason from Paulaner/Hacker-Pschorr will be meeting with us at 7:00 p.m. on June 9th in the Biergarten to get us up to date on the latest happenings from these breweries.  Make plans to join us as we continue to work our way back to normal meeting and events!!
