Frankfurter Apfelwein – Ebbelwoi |
 |
The real Frankfurter Apple Wine is now
available at the Bavarian Grill by the
glass and by the bottle.
Possmann’s flagship is the one
product that has made the company one of
the most recognized apple wine producers
in Germany.
Those of us who spent some time in the
Applewine gardens in Sachsenhausen will
have good memories of this Hessian
specialty.
The Frankfurter Apple Wine is a crisp,
clear wine with the distinct harmony of a
tart wine with fruit flavor of the apple.
Fully fermented with 5.5% alcohol by
volume, the apple wine contains no
additives. It is extremely low on sugar,
(recommended for diabetics), as well as
very low on calories. With the natural
fruit acids, the wine is very soothing and
enhances digestion.

The most interesting thing I learned
today was how the brewing
processes are different. It's
interesting and informative. I enjoyed
and learned a lot.

I thought
the history of beer and it's humble
beginnings was very interesting. I had a
great time, and I learned about the
history of my favorite beverage. while
sampling some of the same, as well as
great brats. A fantastic experience and
quite a value as well.

Jürgen,
"Thank you
for playing tour guide of the Franken
area of Bavaria with us at the Stein

great -- wish we could all go. For me,
the Bier, Wein and food was better
appreciated by learning more about its
origin's, and fun was had by all."

Bier Lovers
Corner:
The Bavarian Brew Industry at a Glance
Bavaria
Is the Land of Beer and Breweries
There is no place on earth with a longer
brewing tradition than Bavaria. To be sure,
beer was not invented in
Bavaria —
that honor goes to the Sumerians of the
Middle East, who became mankind’s first beer makers some 10
thousand years ago. It is in Bavaria,
however, that we find both the oldest
archeological evidence of beer making in
Europe — a Celtic beer amphora from 800 BC —
and the oldest preserved malting plant and
brewhouse, where beer was made by modern
techniques — a complete installation dating
the 179 AD, during the Roman occupation of
Bavaria.
Just about exactly one-half of all German breweries are
located in Bavaria. Bavaria has roughly twice as many
breweries as all member countries of the European Union,
outside of Germany, combined. In addition, one region of
Bavaria, Franconia in the northeastern part of the
state, is said to have the highest concentration of
breweries anywhere in the world — about a hundred
breweries within roughly a hundred-mile radius from the
city of Bamberg. For those who love both beer and
numbers, therefore, there is a lot to quantify in the
land of beer and breweries.
In 2002, there were a total 640 breweries in operation
in Bavaria. This number includes brewpubs that produce
beer only for their own on-premise sales, packaging
breweries that service mostly their local or regional
markets, as well as huge breweries that ship their beers
all over the globe. Bavarian breweries make up almost
exactly half of Germany’s 1279 breweries (2002 figure).
Within the wider European context, the number of
Bavarian breweries is even more astonishing. All EU
countries combined, excluding Germany, have a total of
336 breweries, barely half as many as in little Bavaria.
To put this fact another way, almost 40% of the roughly
1,600 breweries in the entire European Union (with
Germany
included) are located in Bavaria.
Based on these percentages, the international position
of the Bavarian brew industry is undoubtedly impressive,
yet Bavarian brewers are not entirely without worry. As
is the case in many branches of industry all over the
world, the Bavarian brew industry, too, has not escaped
the general trend towards concentration and
consolidation. Many small and mid-size breweries have
merged during the past few decades to create synergies
and greater economic efficiencies. Others have been
bought out by bigger players. Many have quietly just
gone by the wayside. In spite of the large absolute
number of breweries in Bavaria today, there were many,
many more in the past. To quantify the reduction in
numbers, Bavaria has about 41% fewer breweries today
than it did in the year 1960.
In 1960, there were still 1,566 breweries in Bavaria. A
decade later, in 1970, there were only 1,247 left, a
loss of 319 breweries, or roughly 20%. By 1980, Bavaria
had lost another 316 breweries (or another 25%). During
the next few decades, the decline continued, but the
rate of decline slowed down. Of the 931 breweries that
entered the decade of the 1980s, 787 were still in
operation in 1990, a loss of 144 breweries (or roughly
16%). In the 1990s, 120 breweries closed (15%), leaving
a total of 667 breweries at the start of the second
millennium."
