"Bavarian Beer — The People’s
Drink
To Bavarians, beer is not just a beverage;
beer is a basic food! This is evidenced by
the fact that Bavarians drink almost 45
gallons of beer (170 liters) per capita per
year —
compared to “only” about 27 gallons (121
liters) per capita for Germany as a whole.
This is also twice the annual beer
consumption of the average North American.
In fact, if you eliminate from the
calculation all Bavarians under 16 years of
age (which is the legal drinking age in
Germany), the Bavarian per-capita beer
consumption climbs to almost 58 gallons
(nearly 220 liters) per year. Clearly, in
Bavaria, beer is the people’s drink!
