From the Bavarian Grill Stein Club News:

We will elect a new group of Stein Club leaders.

Our current president, Tom Anderson, will conduct the election. He will propose a slate of officers that are nominated to form the new board:
  • As the president: Phillip Walden
  • As the vice-president: Elke Nutterfield
  • As the secretary: Gary Coats
  • As the officer for special projects: Eddie Rose
  • As the Stein Club Newsletter editor: Floyd Wood

The past presidents Bo Fedolak and Tom Anderson will round out the board.

A message from the Stein Club President:

After discussing this food drive with many of you, a concern became evident regarding the short time-frame we have for collecting food.  Accordingly, I have re-named the food drive the
 "Holiday Food and Toy Drive"
and have arbitrarily (with my last exercise of total executive powers) extended our food collection efforts through

Saturday, December 17th.

Please bring your canned and other dry food items or new toys to the Bavarian Grill any time during this period.  The food collection site is by the bar in the front entryway.

We will deliver the food to
Plano's God's Food Pantry
and the toys will go to the
Plano Police Associations "Toys from the Christmas Cops".

Thanks to all.

Bavarian Bier Lovers Corner: What is Bockbier?

In Bavaria, all strong, higher-alcohol beers are known as Bockbiers, and all Bockbiers have one aspect in common: Their extract content is at least 16%. A Doppelbock (“doppel” means “double” in German) may be so named only if it contains at least 18% extract. Extract is the term brewers use to denote the amount of solids (by weight) dissolved in the wort (unfermented beer). Most of these solids are sugars. The rest are proteins, minerals, vitamins, and other trace elements that give the beer its flavor and color.

Because the yeast converts sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide during fermentation, a high extract level also means a high alcohol level, but numerically the two are not the same. As a rule of thumb, the percentage of alcohol by volume in the finished beer is roughly one-third the percentage of extract in the wort. A Bockbier therefore, usually has about 6.5% alcohol, a Doppelbock at least 7.5%. Some of the strongest Bockbiers, such as the Eisbock (“ice Bock”), may have an alcohol content of more than 10%. An average Bavarian lager, by comparison, has an alcohol level of 4.5 - 5%.

Bavarian Bockbiers can be either lagers (bottom-fermented beers) or ales (top-fermented beers). Traditionally, most Bavarian Bockbiers are lagers, your choices at the Bavarian Grill are: the Paulaner Salvator, the Spaten Optimator and the Ayinger Celebrator. Even though several Weizenbier breweries also make strong ales, called Weizenbock, like the Erdinger Pikantus, and Weizendoppelbock, like the Schneider Aventinus, which are both available at the Bavarian Grill.

Loewenbraeu Dunkel:

Great for fall and winter: Bottom fermented, full body, dark brown and an unusual pleasure with it’s rich maltiness and moderate hops . This old, traditional Bavarian beer specialty from Loewenbraeu is the result of a great balance of the ingredients and the fine art of Bavarian brewing.
