Stein Club November Dinner to feature Eisbein on 11-11

Eisbein

Another delightful fall treat awaits Bayern Stein Club members and other guests  on November 11th, when we will enjoy Eisbein, the slow cooked, giant ham hock specialty along with the appropriate side dishes of Sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and pea puree. Since the lighter Pilsner style Biers are popular with this dish, two half-liters of Bitburger will be included with the dinner.

The cost is $29.75, or with the $ 5 discount for members, $24.75 for Stein Club "Mitglieder". And you can share the Eisbein!

Please RSVP by November 10. Please send us an email at bavarian@bavariangrill.com  or contact the Bavarian Grill at 972-881-0705 for reservations. These Special dinners -- open to all guests of the Bavarian Grill -- are normally held on the second Wednesday night of every odd month.

Knowing nothing of Germany, Bavaria, Beer or the Royal family it took me all afternoon to figure this out.  BUT, I love german food.

The name of the castle is Kaltenberg castle, in the beautiful Upper Bavarian countryside, close to Munich. This location contains a Royal residence and a commercial brewery, large entertainment facilities as well as the trade-mark activities for all the Royal Bavarian business areas, including the beer sector.  It is the headquarters for König Ludwig International.

The Wittelsbachs, who ruled the duchy of Bavaria from the 12th century through World War I, have a lengthy brewing history. Duke Ludwig the Severe was the first in his line to open a brewery, and that was in Munich in the 12th century.

In 1516 Duke Wilhelm IV established the Reinheitsgebot beer purity law for all of Bavaria, which stated: "...nothing is to be added to or used in beer other than barley, hops and water. Whosoever knowingly disobeys this decree will be severely punished by the court having jurisdiction over him by having his barrel of beer confiscated whenever this offense occurs."

The German Oktoberfest tradition began in 1810 for the marriage of King Ludwig I, and in 1868 Ludwig II (the "mad" king of Bavaria - the same guy who built amazing Neuschwanstein Castle that became a model for Walt Disney when he built his dream land in California) founded a brewing school in Munich that today is known as the Technische Universitat and boasts 20,000 students.

In the 1990's Crown Prince Luitpold, great grandson of Ludwig III (last of the Bavarian kings), manages the Kaltenberg brewery, which is actually two breweries - one in Kaltenberg proper, where the dark beers are made, and the other in nearby Furstenfeldbruck, where the golden lagers and Konig Ludwig Weiss is made. Prince Luitpold also opened the Kaltenberg Castle Royal Bavarian Brewhouse in Vail, Colorado USA. Th American brewery brews Kaltenberg Pils, Konig Ludwig Dunkel and the weiss, with some seasonals such as an Oktoberfest and Christmas bock.

The Royal family has a very interesting background and I enjoyed reading the stories about them.

Thanks,  Dana

Final vote BGRiA

In Phase 2 voluntary amateur judges provided Inga and her team with detailed feed back.
This Judging Phase ended Sept. 15 and we entered the 3. phase: German Deli's own special team of experts secretly visited leading restaurants "incognito" for one more look. As you can see, our consistent "A" rating with the Plano Health Department assisted the judges to make the right decision and they announced it on October 1st. What a great OKTOBERFEST this is!
