Deadline
Nearing for Contributions
To Time is running out for those who want to contribute to the Bayern Stein Club “Christmas in July” food drive for God’s Pantry in Plano. The drive ends on July 25. Contributions can either be in the form of canned foods and dried staples or cash to be used to purchase food. A box has been set up at the entrance area of the Bavarian Grill for the food. Boxes are available at both bars where money can be placed. “We desperately need a variety of foods at this time,” said Linda White, president and volunteer coordinator for God’s Pantry, located at 3420 E. 14th St. in Plano. “On a recent ‘quiet’ day, for example, we had visits from 63 families and 261 individuals who made requests for food to feed a total of 342 people. In addition, every day we serve about 70 homeless people from Plano and Dallas.” # # # Collections Continue To Honor Memory of Fallen Serviceman Funeral services were conducted June 17 for 1st Lt. Ryan T. Sanders, U.S. Army, who was killed shortly before he was scheduled to return home from Iraq on June 30. Ryan was the brother of Christine Ayers, who created a way for Stein Club members to show their appreciation to American servicemen and women in Iraq. She and her sister collected items such as batteries (AA and AAA), paperback books (mysteries, sci-fi, etc.), DVD copies of TV programs such as The Simpsons, Futurama and South Park, chocolate treats such as pudding and cookies, playing cards and magazines. They were then boxed and sent to Iraq to be distributed among the members of Ryan’s platoon. That effort will continue as a way of honoring his memory. A container is set up in the entrance area of the Bavarian Grill where items may be placed. In a message to Stein Club members, Christine wrote, “Thank you again for all your support and contributions.” A note received from Ryan earlier the month also expressing his appreciation is on display in the bar area of the Bavarian Grill. # # #
World Cup Soccer Action
Continues With the completion of the first round of the World Cup tournament in Germany, soccer fans have discovered there is no better place to watch the action than in front of one of the many TV sets set up throughout the Bavarian Grill. Avid soccer fans attended several special watch parties for games involving the United States or Germany during June. Since the U.S. was eliminated in the first round, the spotlight has fallen on Germany. They will face Argentina in a quarterfinals match on Friday morning at 10am Plano time, and we will watch this classic live! Please join us for this exiting game.
You can see the schedule for the
planned watch parties at the special Stein Club webpage at:
http://www.bavariangrill.com/stein_club_2006_worldcup.html # # # August Stein Club Meeting Set for August 9 The next regular, bi-monthly meeting for the Bayern Stein Club is scheduled for 7 p.m., Wednesday, August 9 at the Bavarian Grill in Plano. Final details will be announced in the August newsletter. But Phillip Walden, Stein Club president, says plans definitely will include samples of a good German Bier available at the Bavarian Grill as well as information about the brewery from which it comes. The June meeting drew a large crowd of over 30 Stein Club members, all of whom received a beautiful one-liter stein courtesy of our Warsteiner Bier Ambassador. # # # Personalized Steins Ordered For New Club Members Several new members were added to the rolls of the Bayern Stein Club in June. Their personalized Bier Steins are on order. Completing their first Bier Card in which they sampled all of the German Biers available at the Bavarian Grill were Jim Parker, Lee Kube, Anatoly Elberg, A.C. Flores, Kerri Protas and Valerie Janes. Others completing cards included: Charles Pepkin and Steve Stacha, 2nd; Rob Lacy, 5th; Ken Jones, 6th; Jim Huffman, 7th; and Mike Birdman, 8th. # # # Did You Know: Bayern Stein Club members should never refer to their personalized Bier Stein as a “mug.” If that happens they are obliged to buy a round for all other club members within earshot. # # # News Briefs from the Bavarian Grill: The next round of Bier Seminars is scheduled to begin August. · Bier and Brats 101 will be held August 17. The fee is $12.50 · Bier 102, titled Grain, Weizen and Wiener Schnitzel, is planned for August 24 for $15.50. · Bier 103, Hops, Pils and Pilz, will be September 7 at a cost of $17.50.
